Rear Admiral Santosh Kumar Gupta, MVC, NM: Leadership, Naval Aviation, and the 1971 War

Talk by Rear Admiral Santosh Kumar Gupta

Some stories are best heard from the people who lived them. The storymakers.
Not as summaries. Not as headlines. But as lived experiences, shared in their own words.

The fourth edition of Valiant Veterans brought one such evening to Bengaluru.
We had the privilege of hosting Rear Admiral Santosh Kumar Gupta, MVC, NM, whose journey spans some of the most defining years of naval aviation in India.

What unfolded was not just a talk. It was an account of service shaped by discipline, responsibility, and leadership in moments that demanded both.

A Career That Began at the Start of Naval Aviation

Rear Admiral Santosh Kumar Gupta, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), Nao Sena Medal (NM), was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1958, at a time when naval aviation in India was still developing its identity.

He joined the fighter stream even before the commissioning of INAS 300 – The White Tigers, one of the Indian Navy’s most well-known squadrons. Being part of this early phase meant working within systems that were still evolving.

There were no established templates.
Processes were being defined in real time.
Expectations were high.

This phase of his career set the foundation for what followed, a journey that combined operational excellence with leadership at scale.

Command During the 1971 War

One of the most significant chapters of his service came during the 1971 war, when he commanded INAS 300 – The White Tigers while embarked on INS Vikrant.

INS Vikrant played a crucial role in naval operations during the war. Operating from an aircraft carrier brings its own level of complexity. Every take-off and landing requires precision. Every mission depends on coordination between multiple teams.

Rear Admiral Gupta spoke about these operations with a sense of responsibility rather than drama. He described the preparation, the execution, and the discipline required to function effectively in such an environment.

For his leadership and gallantry during this period, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.

Leadership Beyond Combat

While the 1971 war remains a defining moment, his contributions extend far beyond a single conflict.

Over the course of his career, Rear Admiral Gupta went on to:

  • Command four ships
  • Lead two air squadrons
  • Head the Naval Academy

Each of these roles required a different approach to leadership.
From operational command at sea to training future officers, the responsibilities were varied and demanding.

He spoke about leadership not as authority, but as accountability.
About setting standards.
About building teams that can function under pressure.

These insights resonated strongly with the audience.

The Session: What Made It Stand Out

The session itself was steady and focused. There was no rush in the way stories were shared. Each experience was placed in context, allowing the audience to understand not just what happened but why it mattered.

The room remained attentive and respectful throughout.
There were no distractions.
People listened. People laughed. People enjoyed his personal stories.

What stood out most was the way his journey connected different aspects of service: aviation, naval operations, and institutional leadership into one continuous narrative.

Why These Conversations Matter

There is a difference between reading about history and hearing it from someone present.

Books provide structure.
Documents provide facts.
But lived experiences provide context.

Valiant Veterans creates a space where this context can be shared without interruption. It allows the audience to engage with stories that are not simplified or compressed.

These sessions are not about scale.
They are about depth.

And that is what makes them meaningful.

The Role of Bengaluru Prayana

For Bengaluru Prayana, Valiant Veterans is an important initiative.

As a platform that focuses on storytelling and community engagement, this series allows us to extend our work beyond places and into lived experiences. It brings people together not just to observe, but to listen and reflect.

Over time, this has started to shape a Valiant Veterans community that values thoughtful conversations. People return not just for the event, but for the experience of being present in such a setting.

The Setting and Support

The session was hosted at Higginbothams, Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road in Bangalore, a space that continues to support these conversations.

The setting plays an important role. It allows the session to remain calm and focused, without distractions. It creates an environment where both the speaker and the audience can engage meaningfully.

Looking Ahead

Valiant Veterans will continue as a monthly series.

Each upcoming edition will bring a new voice, a new experience, and a new perspective. Over time, this will become a growing archive of stories that deserve to be heard and remembered.

Closing Notes

The fourth edition of Valiant Veterans was not just about a decorated officer.
It was about understanding the journey behind the uniform.

Rear Admiral Santosh Kumar Gupta’s story reflects years of preparation, responsibility, and leadership across different roles and environments.

Listening to him was a reminder that service is not defined by a single moment.
It is built over time.

And when such journeys are shared with care, they stay with you long after the session ends.
