About Kempegowda International Airport
Kempegowda International Airport, situated in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, is a bustling aviation hub that plays a pivotal role in connecting the city to destinations around the globe. Named after Kempegowda I, the founder of Bengaluru, the airport stands as a symbol of the city’s historical significance and modern aspirations. As one of the busiest airports in India, Kempegowda International Airport serves as a gateway to Bengaluru, a city renowned for its technological prowess, cultural richness, and entrepreneurial spirit.
The airport’s roots trace back to its foundation in 2008, marking a significant milestone in Bengaluru’s aviation landscape. Over the years, it has witnessed substantial growth and development, evolving into a world-class facility that caters to the increasing demands of domestic and international travellers. The airport’s nomenclature pays homage to the city’s founder, showcasing a deep connection to Bengaluru’s heritage.
Location and Accessibility
Strategically located, Kempegowda International Airport is a crucial transportation hub for Bengaluru and the entire southern region of India. Its accessibility by road and the availability of various transportation options make it a convenient choice for travellers from different parts of the city and neighbouring areas.
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses provide convenient transportation between various parts of the city and the airport terminals. Alternatively, travellers can opt for Uber or Ola cab services. I prefer Meru Cabs due to their ample availability and shorter wait times. Go Pink Taxis are a safe option for solo female travellers arriving at odd hours, conveniently stationed at the Meru Cabs stand.
Terminals of Kempegowda International Airport
Bangalore Airport Terminal 1
Relocated from the HAL Airport (Old Airport), Kempegowda International Airport saw its inaugural flight touch down at Terminal 1 in 2008. Terminal 1 previously catered to both domestic and international flights. However, with the opening of Terminal 2, Terminal 1 now exclusively handles domestic flights, symbolizing a noteworthy milestone in Bangalore’s aviation narrative.
Bangalore Airport Lounge
Terminal 1 has one domestic lounge with 12 zones catering only to domestic travellers. Named after Bangalore’s STD code, 080, the lounge pays homage to the Garden City’s rich heritage through its décor, which features locally inspired art, cultural motifs, and botanical elements.
Operated by Travel Food Services, the lounge offers a serene oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport, providing travellers with a comfortable and stylish environment to relax and unwind before their journey. Embarking on a domestic adventure, passengers can indulge in the serenity and hospitality of these thoughtfully designed spaces.
Food Options
Terminal 1 offers many dining options, ranging from local South Indian delicacies to international cuisine, ensuring something suits every taste. With diverse choices, passengers can indulge in everything from traditional flavours to global favourites. Popular fast food chains like KFC and McDonald’s are also available for those seeking a quick bite, providing convenient options for travellers.
For lovers of coffee, Terminal 1 presents many cafes, including Cafe Coffee Day (CCD), Starbucks, and Smoor, where you can relax and savour your favourite brew.
Bangalore Airport Terminal 2
Opened in 2023, Terminal 2 was crafted by Skidmore Owings and Merrill and built by Larsen and Toubro. Phase 1 of Terminal 2 has been successfully concluded, offering services for both domestic and international flights.
Bangalore Airport Lounge
Terminal 2 features two lounges, catering separately to domestic and international travellers, and both bear the name of Bangalore’s STD code, 080. Situated on level 3 of the terminal, these lounges provide travellers with an exceptional dining experience amidst their journey.
Among the standout features of these lounges is their delectable selection of cuisine, with buffet and à la carte menus expertly curated by Celebrity Chef Ranveer Brar, drawing inspiration from local traditions and ingredients.
Food Options
Compared to Terminal 1, Terminal 2 offers a more limited selection of dining options. While a handful of restaurants and cafes serve South Indian and international cuisine, there is still room for expansion, with many shops yet to open.
Terminal Facilities
The airport boasts state-of-the-art terminals dedicated to both domestic and international flights. Passengers are greeted with a range of facilities, including lounges, shopping outlets, and diverse dining options, creating a comfortable and enjoyable environment for their journey.
Terminal 1 at the airport resembles a bustling international shopping hub rather than just a transit point. Boasting a wide array of dining and shopping choices, it offers a fantastic space to pass the time while awaiting your flight or welcoming arriving passengers. What’s convenient is that both arrivals and departures are situated in the same vicinity, making navigation a breeze.
At Terminal 1, passengers can access a convenient baggage storage facility for an additional fee. This service allows travellers to explore the city without carrying their luggage during transit hours.
Terminal 2, although still undergoing development, elevates your airport experience to a whole new level. With its breathtaking art installations and striking interiors, it rivals any international airport across the globe. Compared to Terminal 1, Terminal 2 transports you to a higher echelon of sophistication and ambience.
In addition to the two public terminals, the airport facility encompasses a range of essential services and amenities. These include aviation fuel services, cargo facilities, the IndiGo iFly Training Academy, maintenance repair and overhaul facilities, and a central kitchen.
Airlines and Destinations
Kempegowda International Airport hosts a multitude of airlines, both domestic and international, connecting Bengaluru to a vast network of destinations. From major global hubs to exotic locales, the airport facilitates seamless travel for business and leisure purposes.
Passenger Experience
The airport prioritizes passenger convenience, implementing streamlined check-in procedures, efficient security measures, and top-notch baggage handling services. Travellers experience a smooth transition from arrival to departure, enhancing the airport experience.
Staff members are readily available throughout the airport to assist and guide you during your visit. However, be prepared for potentially lengthy queues as the airport is consistently bustling with activity. It’s advisable to arrive well in advance to avoid any inconvenience. The security screening process can be time-consuming, as you must remove all electronic devices (including chargers, mobile phones, cameras, and power banks) and place them in trays. Additionally, separate queues for men and women are in place, with women sometimes experiencing longer wait times.
Airport Technology and Innovation
Kempegowda International Airport embraces technological advancements and sustainable practices. From cutting-edge security systems to eco-friendly initiatives, the airport continually strives to enhance operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
Lately, the terminals have introduced self-check-in stations allowing passengers to scan, weigh, and check in their baggage independently, without assistance from staff. This innovative feature is particularly beneficial for frequent flyers and those who prefer a swift check-in process.
Future Developments
As Bengaluru continues to develop, so does its airport infrastructure. Kempegowda International Airport is actively engaged in ongoing and upcoming projects to expand its capacity, particularly in Terminal 2 and renovate Terminal 1. These initiatives include the introduction of new facilities and the integration of cutting-edge technologies. Such advancements highlight the airport’s dedication to adapting to the changing demands of travellers and ensuring a seamless experience for all.
Closing Notes
In unravelling the layers of Kempegowda International Airport, you discover not just a transit point but a dynamic entity that mirrors the spirit of Bengaluru. This city bridges tradition with modernity, innovation with heritage, and local charm with global connectivity. Join us in exploring the diverse facets of this gateway to Bengaluru, where every takeoff and landing signifies a connection to the heart of South India’s vibrant culture and economic dynamism.
